Blog #4, Mental Health

Image
In class this week, we read multiple articles and learned more about mental health. Mental health is an extremely important topic and being aware of the signs of mental illness and or mental health disorders is something all teachers should consider educating themselves in. Reading the slideshow called A Silent Epidemic, I learned a lot more about how schools are struggling to help students with mental illness. According to A Silent Epidemic slideshow, every 1 in 5 students struggles with mental health disorders or shows signs of it. The problem is that schools have hundreds of students, and not enough school psychologists or social workers. There are not enough people within schools to support students in need of counseling; "  About one in five children in the United States shows signs of a mental health disorder — anything from ADHD to eating disorders to suicide.  And yet, as we've been reporting this month, many schools aren't prepa...

Blog #3, Bullying

Image
Bullying is a major issue throughout the world. It may happen in schools, on the bus, in public places or even online. Bullying can negatively impact kids day to day lives at home and in school. It is sad to see that most kids have experienced bullying at some point in their lives. With bullying being such a major issue, something must be done to stop it. If we all work together, we can get through it.  Discuss at least one thing from Bully that stuck out in your mind. Why?  From  watching  the documentary, "Bully",  there  were some things that really stuck out  in my   mind. First off, hearing the stories of several different kids that were bullied absolutely broke my heart, and knowing that this is happening to thousands of kids around the United States alone, hurts even more. What really stuck out to me was that some of these school officials shown within this documentary honestly did not seem to care. First off, when looki...

Blog #2, School Violence

Image
Unfortunately, one of the harsh realities that must be discussed today is school violence. For me, I was fortunate enough to not have to go through any major violence in school such as school shootings or any real lockdowns. This is not the case for many schools around our country in particular. Throughout the past few years, there have been a number of school shootings, and this should not be something that happens. Students should not have to fear for their lives when waking up and going to school in the morning hoping that there won't be an armed intruder in their school, or hoping that none of the other students would bring in a weapon. Not only that, but school violence also includes harassment and bullying, which are unfortunately much more common, but also terrible things for children to have to go through. I was bullied quite a lot in middle school, and I remember feeling so alone. As a future educator, I want to ensure my students safety, and I want the...

Blog #1, Racism, Prejudice and Bias

Image
As future educators, we need to be aware of the critical issues throughout the world today. Some major issues throughout the world are racism, prejudice and bias. When it comes to racism, schools should have anti-racism programs, assemblies, seminars etc. Unfortunately, there are children who live in racist households, teaching them that racism is okay, which is clearly not the case. I think that what a lot of parents don’t realize is that their children copy them, mimic them and learn from their words or actions. When children grow up this way, they bring it out of their homes and into their schools, within their friend groups and into the real world. Unfortunately as teachers, we do not have control over what they are learning at home, therefore we should teach them the right things in the classroom. While I do understand that talking about these specific topics to our students can be sensitive or uncomfortable at times, it cannot be swept under the rug any longer.  While I do un...
